Last week I had a fun class of 2010 session around the Sun Lakes area (near Ephrata/Moses Lake WA) for Justine. She brought a few friends and we walked around the parks and roads. There were plenty of great views and everyone loved the results when we had her proof session earlier this week. Justine like many of our seniors is be getting a great canvas wall portrait of the cliff image above along with plenty of other goodies.

Heather is a Quincy High School student, but for her portraits we went on location to Davenport WA (near Spokane) to a neat old farm owned by the family. No one lives there anymore, but the the location was perfect. The weather had been a bit stormy, but it calmed down in the evening and the remaining clouds gave us some stunning images.
Big props to heather and her hoarse Snickers for doing such a great job. The top image is one of my favorites, but there were so many to choose from. Heather will be getting a senior album so she can show all her poses as well as a one of our canvas Wall Portraits of the image above. It’s going to look great in their home. Camp Zanika is a campground on Lake Wenatchee (near Leavenworth) run by Campfire. Rebecca is in the class if 2009 at Camas High School. Her family owns the Blue Goose Lodge in Oregon. They came up last weekend and we met her mom Lisa at Zanika and got some amazing fall portraits. Rebecca was a bit cold, but she was a trooper and we all had fun.
My wife used to go to camp Zanika when she was younger, and had already met Rebecca and her mom. The funny thing is none of us knew that they contacted us to to Rebecca’s portraits. Small world.

Saturday morning I had a great senior session for Kaylee in Ellensburg WA. She also happens to be my cousin. It was fun, and she did a great job posing.I remember practicing my portrait skills one time on Kaylee when I was 12 or 13 years old. Needless to say the pictures this time came out better.
I love how the fall colors worked on the location we went. It makes the coming cold worth it. I used my effects for a variety of looks. Here’s a few favorites. Click for BIG views, and the link for the complete gallery… Gav
There’s three key control points I find in a portrait. The eye’s, the mouth, and the hands. By guiding those three points, and letting the subjects own personality do the rest, you can make them laugh, smirk, and jump for joy all in the same session.
The backgrounds and the props are useful tools of course, but are all relative to helping with the three keys. Almost any scene can be a great one. I just say a prayer for some guidance in helping me find what’s great about it, and how to put it to use.
I shoot all over the state, so this session for Casey in my own town of Ephrata was relaxing and fun. Casey did a great job. She came off a little shy at first, but I soon decided out she wasn’t really that shy. She just needed to start having some fun, and once she did we were off.
